Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez has been a member of Real Madrid’s youth set-up for the past six years, but this will be his final season in charge of Real Madrid Castilla. The 47-year-old started out with the Under-19s but was quickly promoted to Castilla after winning the UEFA Youth League and was even considered a potential candidate to take over the senior role at one point.
However, this rhetoric has significantly subsided, with “Marca” stating that Real Madrid has informed him that this is his last year in charge of Castile. Raúl has been close to promotion from the third tier on several occasions, but after a mediocre season last year and with Castilla currently in the relegation zone, the team shows little sign of improvement.
This is his sixth season in charge of Castilla and few players have broken into the first team, although this is largely due to Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane’s interest in using young players. Players lack interest. Raúl will have the option of taking on more of an office role within the academy, or another potential option available to him is to join the first-team coaching staff. His relationship with Carlo Ancelotti is excellent and the Italian has been calling for reinforcements to his coaching staff.
More important than Castilla’s results, one of the key factors in this transfer may be Alvaro Arbeloa. After achieving good results with the Under-17s and now Under-19s, he is viewed by the club as a potential first-team coach. He will succeed Raul next summer, a move that some had expected to happen sooner.
Of course, Raul’s third option may be to leave Real Madrid and pursue a career elsewhere. There have also been regular links with other jobs in Germany, particularly former team Schalke, as well as other teams in Spain. Raul was interviewed by Villarreal and Espanyol in 2024 and 2023, but was ultimately rejected.
