With Alexander-Arnold’s contract at Liverpool set to expire at the end of the season, there has been much discussion surrounding the full-back in recent weeks, but the Merseyside club continue to work on the issue.
Liverpool plan to keep their academy graduate for the long-term and according to The Athletic’s James Pearce, conversations with the 26-year-old’s representatives remain open and ongoing as everyone works towards a deal.
The England star’s contract situation has weighed on Real Madrid’s interest, with the La Liga champions planning a move for the Reds star if he doesn’t sign a new contract at Anfield, according to Marca.
It’s a move that could appeal to Alexander-Arnold as the Spanish club are the biggest in the world and are a guaranteed destination for him to win trophies. The right-back has won everything Liverpool need and many believe the defender may want a new challenge.
Alexander-Arnold has now given Liverpool fans hope that he will sign a new contract at Anfield, with the 26-year-old admitting he does not want his career to be defined by trophies.
Staying at Liverpool and breaking records, becoming captain and adding to past success for the Premier League giants could mean more to the homegrown star than a move to Real Madrid, but only time will tell what decision he will make.
Trent Alexander-Arnold hints at staying at Liverpool
Alexander-Arnold has admitted in an interview with ITV that he does not want to define his career by trophies and admitted he has considered the prospect of not winning any more.
“That was a conversation I had with (Eberechi) Eze when we went to Ireland for the last (England) training camp,” the Reds defender told ITV. “I said, ‘You know, I may never win a trophy again in my career.’ There is this opportunity. I have the opportunity to win more, more.
“You won’t know until the morning after you retire. When you look at yourself in the mirror, you will feel regret or satisfaction at what you have accomplished.
The England star continued: “But I don’t think you can measure it by trophies, medals, goals and assists; that kind of thing.
“More importantly, I gave it my all from start to finish, I put everything into it.
“As long as I can say, I’m trying to get better every day, I’m trying to be the best player on the team, I’m trying to help the team win as many games as possible, and I believe I’m getting the most out of everyone. If you tell me the potential when you are young, then I will be very satisfied.
